WIR - March 20, 2011

I got back into the pool twice this week. Much better than the last time I swam laps – last time it was slow and painful (from the bike crash) – this time it was just slow. To be honest it was actually not even that slow it just was not fast. I’m nit sure where my running has gone this week. I only have a month until Boston. I am worried. This is not my A race and I am not going to race this marathon but I do want to finish and finish strong. I guess what I am saying is that I don’t want to suffer through this event. I want to soak it all up and enjoy it! I need to at least ramp up the volume to 40 or 50 miles a week and let it hang out for a while. I have just been having difficulties building the mileage. The back has been the limiting factor. Anything over about 6 miles and I ache for the rest of the day and some of the next. I Tuesday I ran 8 miles at lunch and that hampered me for the rest of the week. I could not achieve my running or cycling goals. I was also able to get back into the gym for a little bit of strength training – I have started do a few pushups and lots of abs.

With this injury, although it is getting better, I have been having to walk a fine line.

New totals for the week:

TIME 11 hours (up 2:15 - last week 8:45) :

SWIM – 3500 yards (up 3500)

BIKE – 115.5 miles (up 19.35)

RUN – 24.0 miles (down 4.5)

STRENGTH – 40 minutes (up 40)

Sorry to hear you are struggling. One great thing, though, is the base you have coming off your last marathon. Sometimes that can carry you pretty far.

Have you found the pool to help strengthen what is irritated in your back?

You're still in the process crushing it with the 40-50 miles per week. I can't get that high.

James, so sorry the back is still a problem. I hope that gets better real soon. Does the pool help that at all?

Wow, you are still getting a solid week in. I agree with Zippy, I think you have a solid base and that can carry you pretty far.

I'm new, so this may be naive, but do you know what it is about your back that bothers you? (muscle tension, bones, etc.)

I went through a lot of tension issues when I started running and it all turned out to be my form. Hot tub, warm massages, and form checking solved it.

Hey Kurt –

The back trouble is very new to me. I have never had any upper / lower / middle back pain – count me lucky. But the bike accident that I had a month ago really bruised me up in the lower back. Fortunately it was not a spinal injury but pure muscle (someone did suggest a possible cracked rib). Anyway, the back pain is from trauma. It is healing but the impact from the running has been aggravating it.

Thanks for the comment.
