Coach James

I grew up as an overweight child. My diet was unhealthy and activity levels were low. This turned into negative habits as an adult. I started smoking in my teens and was soon up to a pack a day. Thirteen years of smoking, being sedentary and a horrible diet led me to being overweight – actually morbidly obese. My mother died of a heart attack at the age of 52. This woke me up to my own mortality. I had to make a change! One of the greatest accomplishments of my life was simply quitting smoking. Unfortunately this led to even more weight gain. I was now 60 pounds over my current weight. I started to consciously think about what I was eating and becoming more active. I started to strength train and exercise. I loved seeing the positive results. I soon started to compete in some 5k running races. As I continued to have success I took on the challenge of triathlon. Although I had grown up near water I did not really know how to swim well. Sure, I could swim across the pool and throw a beach ball back and forth but not really swim. Having made a triathlon a goal I had to teach myself to swim. The first time at the pool I was so frustrated after just a few laps. The swim seemed insurmountable. Now fast forward a couple of years and I have successfully competed in dozens of triathlons culminating in the 2009 Ironman Louisville (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride, 26.2 mile marathon). Most recently I have successfully qualified for the Boston Marathon by running 26.2 miles in 3:08:44 at the 2010 Mardi Gras Rock ‘N Roll marathon. I continue to look for fun and unique challenges to improve my performance and my fitness. Through hard work and smart training I am the healthiest and fittest that I have ever been. I feel wonderful. I am a USA Triathlon and Road Runners Club of America Certified Coach.
