Tired legs after 20 mile long run.

After the 20 mile long run on Sunday, the legs hurt. They were more than tired. I dug around the pantry and threw together a huge calorie dense post workout recovery shake. It had electrolyte powder, BCAA’s, lots of sugars, whey protein powder and a blend of several manufactures proprietary bends.

It tasted okay. I then showered off, ate a sandwich, put compression socks on, elevated the legs and turned on the football game. I relaxed like this for about an hour. When I got up I was stiff, the legs hurt. Charles and I went to the K&B a little while later. We were meeting someone for hops (beer making). I ate a good burger and finished watching the first game. I only had two beers.

compression socks – I really don’t know if they work or not.

When I got home it was time to elevate the legs again. I relaxed for a while and then turned in early – actually early is my normal time.

I had a very restless night’s sleep. The legs were more than tired, they hurt. They hurt all night. They hurt in the morning. I woke up at around 4AM. I was still planning to go to Masters Swim but I talked myself out of it. My legs were stiff, they hurt. I laid in bed and drank my coffee.

I went to work at regular time. The legs were starting to feel better. I went to the gym at lunch and did some strength training – nothing for the legs. I am not sure when but the legs felt better by early afternoon.

I have a hard set of intervals on Tuesday – 10 x 800’s on 2:55ish (I say ish because they are supposed to be on 2:50 but I am not quite that fast). These Yasso’s have been a staple of my marathon training program. I am not sure if I will be able to perform today.

Consider an ice bath after your speedwork... might help. And it was a good idea to let yourself rest a bit.

Good job on getting the 20 miler done, but I'm sorry your legs are hurting you so much. I think you were smart to let them rest and take it easy for awhile.

i don't know if compression socks work, but i like wearing mine. they feel good at least. by elevate do you mean laying on the floor with your legs on the wall?

I would recommend an ice bath as well. Anything over 16 miles for training I will do Ice Baths. They suck but quick recovery man!

I feel fresh within 24 hrs of doing them.

I am sure you are doing this, but make sure you keep fueling your body properly so it has good nutrients to repair itself.

I hate the ice baths (in the winter). And by elevate I just prop my legs up on the couch - above my torso.

The ice bath would have been a good idea.

I am a BIG fan of compression in recovery. I have had good results from recovery tights and socks. I like get into them immediately after I shower and even sleep in them. I wrote a blog on the socks the other day (coming soon)
