WIR-May 14, 2011

This has been a challenging week.  All scheduled workouts were completed (working the plan) but life and work got in the way a couple of times.  I’ll follow up on this but I cannot emphasize the importance of a training plan (any plan).  The workouts just would not have happened if they were not planned and scheduled.  When pressed for resources (time, stress, energy) not having to think and just execute is the easiest thing to do!

On Tuesday I had a cycling TT and PR’d the course!  (Actually I looked back and in 2009 I might have had a faster time by 6 seconds – this was pre Garmin days.  I missed it when I looked back over the previous TT’s.  This was a solo effort.  The heart rates back then were so much lower than today.  I am a better time trialer but the times are not reflecting it.  Here is the post from June, 2009 - A new TT PB - on the bike).

So we had an issue at work earlier in the week.  I got called in the middle of the night and had to take care of some business – that is the nature of computer jobs.  Thinks sometimes break and they don’t care what time it is – they do not wait until morning.  So, I was up at about 1:30AM and stayed at work until about 5PM.  It was a long day.  I did get my workout in but I took it at noon instead of 6AM.  The temperature made a huge difference and the 5 mile tempo was failure.  I had adjusted for the 90+ temps but it was not enough (and the lack of sleep and cycling TT the day before).  I did the 5 miles but only the 1st and 4th miles were at the appropriate speed.  I was okay with that.  That night I hit the sack at 7:30PM and sleep until 5AM – much needed sleep.

The swim has also been compromised.  The Payne Center is still closed due to the fire – last month!  I have signed up for summer Master’s Swim but it does not start until June.  Not that I need an excuse to skip the swim but this is getting ridiculous!

TIME 11:00 hours
SWIM – 2100 yards (all Open Water)
BIKE – 130 miles
RUN – 13 (Really – just 13 miles but all fast)runs)
STRENGTH – 45 minutes
OTHER - 1 hour (racquetball)

I hate when "life" get's in the way of my passion.

I can't even imagine trying to workout after having been up since 1:30 am....GREAT job! Sounds like you had a solid week!

Those kinds of episodes teach us what we really can do and push us to our limits. A lesser person would have not done the midday workout and you did. So I think you won this battle. Bravo James!
